If you’re looking for a cool place to hang out after hitting the DTLA nightlife around 2 am in the morning I have the place for you. Or if you can’t sleep and just want to get out of the house despite the hour of the night, coupled with a taste for something good, this is it.
That’s what happened to me and my husband. We decided to get out and go for a walk around downtown and see what we could find that was open. We had passed Birdies, in the Southpark area of downtown, many times during the day, but didn’t realize it was open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. Walking by on this late night/early morning, we noticed a crowd inside, even at 2 am, and decided to try it. Oh boy we’re glad we did. We didn’t leave for a couple of hours. And we weren’t the only ones. The place was full of a diverse mix of people, some clearly coming from area clubs, others clearly just neighborhood resident night owls. But everyone was having a good time as they milled about eating their donuts and chicken, or having their coffee. And the crowds kept coming. My husband and I were truly amazed at how popular the place was. Clearly the food combo was a hit. But so is the environment.
Well, when you enter Birdies, at least on weekend nights, prepare yourself to not only be taken aback by the menu, but to be entertained by the Chicken Tenders behind the counter. Yes, that’s what the staff at Birdies call themselves – Not Bar Tenders. Chicken Tenders! These servers aren’t your ordinary run of the mill folks who wait on you though. These amazingly talented people can DANCE!
They were having so much fun and dancing to the hip hop music playing over the sound system, that it felt like we were in a fun and hip bar or club.
When you walk in, you’re greeted by a Chicken Tender who is ready to let you select and sample any of their wonderfully savory donuts. And they have quite the variety of donuts to pick from. Just let your personal Chicken Tender know you’d like to try their Triple Dark Chocolate donut, or a Cinnamon Toast Crunch donut and if you really want to try their Lemon Thyme Pistachio, go for it. I wasn’t all that keen on the Lemon Thyme Pistachio but everything else was fantastic! There’s Blueberry Lemon, NY Black & White, Boston Creme-Filled, and other fun, creative choices. And yes, I ended up trying them ALL! My Tender was so patient, lively, funny and knowledgeable of the entire menu even asking me what I was in the mood for and made helpful suggestions.
Now when it comes to Chicken, Birdies earns its name with their Leg & Thigh order, their Birdies Fried Chicken Wings, Birdies Bites and their Birdies Breakfast Sandwich which is over easy or scrambled eggs with fried chicken tenders or apple wood tender smoked bacon, Tillamook cheddar cheese topped with Birdies special sauce. Of course there is the Birdies Original Chicken Sandwich which is served with cole slaw, buttermilk ranch mayo, Tillamook cheddar & cured pickles and is made from ABF free range, veggie fed, antibiotic free and air chilled chicken. Yummers! And nice to know the owner, Chef J, takes that extra step.
Observing the crowd, and the line of people at the counter, the chicken sandwiches and bites are clearly a well-known and popular choice. And if you taste them, you’ll instantly know why this is such a popular destination, day or night.
Birdies is open every day, and during regular business hours as well, so don’t worry you don’t have to be a night owl or club hopper to experience the fun and taste the deliciously decadent donuts and wonderful chicken. But if you do come on a Friday or Saturday night, prepare yourself to end up staying a while.
